Stand Fearless
"Ka tū te ihiihi" - Stand Fearless
Want to lose weight, get fit, change?
When the mountain seems too tall to climb, when the weight you want to lose seems unachievable, or that professional ladder is set far too high, break the task into small, micro chunks or commitments, and be hard! When it gets hard, stand fearless to the task, forge ahead relentlessly.
Dr Suess had it licked a long time ago. “Inch by Inch it’s a synch, yard by yard it’s hard” and “what you do a little, you’ll soon be able to do a lot”
In the past my ability to endure, survive, and be successful in my own metaphoric wars has been the implantation of the Divide and Conquer strategy.
The divide and conquer strategy has been widely used throughout history. Both the Roman empire and the British empire played small tribes and groups against one another in order to control their lands and territories. It was used by the Romans when they took Britain, when the British Empire took India, and when the Anglo-Normans took Ireland.
A staple political strategy, divide and conquer is still used by many countries today.
The wars in our lives (saving for a house, running and training for an ultra marathon, losing 20-30kg etc) are way too big, massive, and inconceivable at times. Because if they weren’t we would all be Fucken rich, skinny and happily married, yet we are not are we?
Though if we zoom out, observe strategically what lies ahead, we can tactically break this enormous metaphoric war into specific small battles, so we can conquer the beast before us, and eventually win this war.
The strategy has a similar meaning to the old Chinese proverb “The man who moved a mountain is the one who started taking away the small stones.”
It is a reminder that big tasks can be overwhelming or feel impossible, and when we break them down into smaller tasks they feel less daunting and easier to achieve.
So, it is all those small actions that ultimately help us achieve our goals and dreams, DAILY. Remember, it’s the micro ones not the MACRO. That shit adds up. It is dogged determination, a relentless resolve, and persistence day in/day out that effects change.
It is honestly the daily decisions that We make about exercise, about chocolate, about savings, about conversations, about sticking up for your damn self that will affect how successful we are, or how long we hang on.
So, what small action will you take today to move you towards your goals and dreams?
How fearless will you stand in reaching out to the client, having courageous conversations with your boss, your spouse or in my case doing pull ups, and making the choice to eat healthier food?
Set your sights on what’s important, go big!
Then reverse engineer it, break it down into small chunks, and deploy your own Spartan, Roman army.
