This poem was found written on a wall of a cell in death row.
It was composed by an anonymous prisoner who was later executed.
When you get what you want in your struggle for self,
And the world makes you king for a day,
Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that man has to say.
For it isn’t a man’s father, mother or wife,
Whose judgement upon him must pass,
The fellow whose verdict counts most in life,
Is the man staring back from the glass.
He’s the fellow to please, never mind all the rest,
For he’s with you clear to the end,
And you’ve passed your most dangerous, difficult test,
If the man in the glass is your friend.
You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But the final reward will be heartache and tears,
If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.
The poem itself has many sides to it and a number of meanings that would resonate powerfully with lots of people for lots of different reasons.
However what does this poem represent for me as a fitness professional and an influencer of other peoples health, longevity and education.
We owe it too ourselves to be disciplined with training and clean living. Most the time. We often need to remember to make the most of our god given ability whilst we actually still can. This journey we are issued is not a given, as John Lennon sang so beautifully “Borrowed Time” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfWPkLvM7kc
Living on borrowed time, Without a thought for tomorrow
Eventually the luxury of youth ends. Time catches up.
Im not sure about your opinion on this matter but for me as i begin to age in this world I realise more and more that other people including myself are not particular interested in what you could of done, should of done, or what you might have done. ALL THAT MATTERS IS WHAT YOU DID.
Don’t fucken wait for tomorrow (or another time) its not guaranteed. Take small steps if the big ones wig you, freak you or scare you out!!! Little steps, baby steps, the small ones, momentum will come.
It is a fallacy to think there is a future in waiting for tomorrow or another time. It always starts today!
So consider this poem and the slim possibility that it relates to your health, your fitness, your lifestyle cleanliness, if there is something you wish to achieve, get out there and grab it, get it for yourself.
Wake up in the morning stare directly at that devastatingly beautiful reflection looking back in the mirror, and make your reflection your friend.
